Australia Sends its First IP Counsellor to China

Australia is sending its first ever intellectual property counsellor to China to support Australian businesses operating in the country.

Based in Bejing, David Bennett - a former IP Australia patent examiner - will provide expert advice on how Australian exporters and brands can navigate China's ever-changing IP regulations. "A lot of businesses were having issues that stem from a lack of understanding of the Chinese IP system," he told The Australian Financial Review.

Mr Bennett recently caught up with local Australian businesses in Shanghai during a roundtable discussion organised by AustCham Shanghai to understand the issues they encountered to protect their brand and talk through China's IP landscape.

As China and Australia celebrate the first anniversary of their bilateral Free-Trade Agreement, the nature of economic exchanges has moved away from bulk commodities to cover food, beverages and professional services, exposing new Australian exporters to potential trademark disputes.
