Event Recap | HR Committee Event: Global Leadership in the "New Normal"
On Wednesday July 8th 2020, AustCham Shanghai and the BritCham Shanghai co-hosted an HR committee event on global leadership in the "new normal” at the Australia House by AustCham Shanghai. The panel discussion focused on how organisations can improve their leadership in order to cope with the shifting environment due to the COVID-19. Our four speakers gave their personal insight on how COVID-19 has changed the way businesses function through an HR perspective.
AustCham Shanghai would like to thank our guest speakers Fabrizio Ullvi, Gabor Holch, Sue Wei, and Catherine Jin for sharing their experiences in HR during this pandemic.
Here some key takeaways from the panel discussion:
Gabor Holch from Campanile Management Consulting discussed how some companies are doing surprisingly well because they are very agile and are able to keep their traditional value but change part of their companies. He explains the importance of preparing managers from all over Asia for international leadership positions and preparing them for new scenarios that could arise during this ongoing pandemic.
Sue Wei from Hays explains that the “New normal” is shifting from a traditional office culture to a new digital platform for work. This includes virtual teams, virtual meetings, and having employees over the world. Sue further explains how global companies should decentralize decision making because every country is in a different situation and, therefore, decisions must be made local not global.
Catherine Ji from Sony describes how HR in Sony has approached the new normal by adopting a new strategy of thinking. She tells the audience that Sony created a survey for employees, asking how they feel about working at home. The survey results showed that many employees believed it was more efficient and effective working at home.
