In the first webinar, Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment the Hon Dan Tehan joined by Simon Woods, CEO and Executive Director for AustCham Shanghai, David Olsson, National President for ACBC and Unice Liu, Managing Director and Partner for BBG, addressed the current relationship between Australia and China. The Minister discussed current opportunities that exist in the China market, highlighting the importance of maintaining the trade relationship with China in the areas that have demonstrated historical strength. He also addressed emerging areas of opportunity, particularly around decarbonization, hydrogen energy, investment and research into renewable energies and collaboration in international sporting activities.
Existing challenges arising from Covid-19 and its effects on supply chain, logistics, market access in certain categories, people to people movements and ability for dialogue were confronted. Positive steps, however, were recognised particularly with China’s active engagement in international trading systems such as the WTO, RCEP, ChAFTA, and its push to join the CPTTP. AustCham Shanghai expressed the desire of these frameworks to bring about certainty, as quoted by CEO and Executive Director Simon Woods “Uncertainty can kill commerce even in good sectors… (we need) certainty around systems in place so businesses have certainty that things won’t change overnight.”
