RECAP | Australia-China Sports Summit 2019
The 3rd Australia-China Sports Summit held on Thursday, 30 May 2019 brought together another year of amazing speakers from the Sports industry here in China and around the world, across a wide range of sporting codes and expertise.
Each speaker had a unique story to tell of personal and brand experiences, industry insights and expectations of sport in the future.
In a panel discussion with the AFL and JUSS Sports, Dave Stevenson, GM China & India, Head of Audiences, Products & Innovation, AFL and Patrick Yang, Deputy General Manager, Shanghai JUSS Sports Group, spoke about the blossoming relationship between the two organisations as well as the lessons learned, providing tips for partnering for success in China.
Professor Dongfeng Liu, Professor and Associate Dean of School of International Education, Shanghai University of Sports, presented an impressive pool of research into the rise of sport in China, the current state of the industry and prospective challenges ahead, particularly in elite sport and boosting general participation. Professor Dongfeng Liu concluded his address with an optimistic view of sport in China and provided a clear picture for the audience of the largest opportunity sectors.
Fugui Chen, Deputy General Secretary, Shanghai Football Association and Tom Elsden, Client Director, Mailman Group provided indepth knowledge into grassroots football in Shanghai and how to best target Chinese sports fans.
On ‘Delivering International Sport in China’ moderated by Mark Fischer, CEO, Eastbridge Sports Management, we heard perspectives from an extensive panel of representatives from different sporting codes:
• Benjamin Wahl, Head of China, Borussia Dortmund
• Dave Stevenson, GM China & India, Head of Audiences, Products & Innovation, AFL
• Yiying Shi, Director of Sports, Jiemian
• Jeremy Loeliger, CEO, NBL.
In a full Mandarin address, Qiuping Li, Head Coach of 上海久事篮球俱乐部, formerly the Shanghai Sharks, spoke on Shanghai Basketball and the Australian partnerships before attendees had the chance to participate in an insightful Q&A. The session was made possible by HI-COM’s instantaneous translation services.
Last but not least, we heard from the likes of Wendy Mao and Emily Dunn on the world of 'Sponsorship: How to Build Brand Awareness in China'. Emily is the China Government Relations Manager for Swisse and Wendy Mao is the Chief Operating Officer for Auswan Creek.
