Reshaping Australia’s Foreign Policy Direction

In August 2016, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop commissioned a new Foreign Policy White Paper, the first since the Howard administration’s Advancing the National Interest published in 2003. Driven by Ms Bishop and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) head Frances Adamson, the White Paper aims to provide a "philosophical framework to guide Australia's engagement, regardless of international events".

The international economic terrain has considerably changed over the last 13 years, with China now playing a pivotal role in Australia’s trade interests as Australia’s largest trading partner. AustCham Shanghai supports the development of a new Foreign Policy White Paper and welcomes the opportunity to help shape Australia’s new foreign policy framework.

As a leading representation body for Australian businesses in China, AustCham Shanghai has formulated a Foreign Policy White Paper Submission to DFAT on behalf of the Australian business community. The submission details six economic policy recommendations for the Australian Government that specifically relate to the Chinese market.

This submission is the result of months of consultation with member companies through a targeted survey, roundtable discussion and thousands of individual conversations with the China-based Australian business network. AustCham Shanghai sincerely thanks all of the members that contributed to the development of this submission.
