China’s e-commerce boom is influencing payment options in Australia, as demonstrated by taxi giant Cabcharge’s decision to accept Alipay in more than 20,000 taxis around the country.

This deal can be seen as an attempt by Cabcharge to reinvent itself as a digitally savvy transport company following the entry of Uber, as well as catering to the target audience of Chinese visitors to Australia - many of whom have grown unaccustomed to cash-based transactions. With more than 8,000 merchants in Australia and New Zealand now accepting Alipay since its 2016 launch, China’s cashless transactional services are definitely a source of new technology gradually being harnessed by businesses with intentions of catering to the growing pool of return visitors from China.
