Elizabeth Gaines is the first female CEO of Fortescue Metals Group, a global leader in the iron ore industry recognised for its unique culture, innovation and industry-leading infrastructure and mining assets in the Pilbara, Western Australia. FMG is a major influencer in the Australia China relationship as a core supplier of China’s seaborne iron ore.

Elizabeth is a regular presenter on business in China as well as the mining industry and is now bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience to AustCham Shanghai.

Elizabeth Gaines is the CEO of Fortescue Metals Group

A highly experienced business leader with extensive international experience as a CEO and group executive, She has worked across a number of industries, including resources, construction and infrastructure, financial services and travel and hospitality.

After joining Fortescue as a Non-Executive Director in February 2013, Elizabeth was appointed CFO and Executive Director in February 2017. She is a former CEO of Helloworld Limited and Heytesbury Pty Limited and has also held the position of CFO at Stella Group and Entertainment Rights Plc.

Elizabeth has significant exposure to the impact of the growth in Asian economies, particularly China, on the Australian business environment and economy as well as a deep understanding of all aspects of financial and commercial management at a senior executive level in both listed and private companies. A member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Chief Executive Women, Elizabeth holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and Master of Applied Finance degree and has recently been recognised as number two in the Fortune Businessperson of the Year list.
